On arrival at Tunis airport, you are welcomed by our local representative. Begin with Carthage, the legendary Punic city founded by Queen Elissa (Dido), once Rome's great rival, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. Continue to Sidi Bou Said, the clifftop village of whitewashed houses and blue doors, with its cobbled lanes, cafés and sweeping Mediterranean views.

Overnight: Tunis

Drive through the rolling wheat fields of the north-west to Dougga, the best-preserved Roman town in North Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk among its Capitol, theatre, temples and paved streets, set on a hillside with panoramic views. After lunch, continue to Kairouan.

Discover Kairouan, Islam's fourth holiest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Great Mosque of Okba, the oldest in North Africa, the 9th-century Aghlabid Basins, the tiled Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi, and stroll the medina, famous for its carpets and makroud pastries. After lunch, head south-west across the steppe to the oasis town of Tozeur.

After a visit of Tozeur, known for its vast palm grove and ornate brick architecture, set off by 4WD into the mountains near the Algerian border. Discover the oases of Chebika, clinging to the rock face, and Tamerza, with its waterfall, canyon and abandoned old village. Lunch in Tamerza. In the afternoon, ride out to Ong Jemel ("the camel's neck"), a dramatic rock formation rising from the desert, and the nearby sand dunes where scenes of Star Wars were filmed.

Overnight: Tozeur

Cross the Chott el Jerid, Tunisia's largest salt lake, a shimmering expanse of salt crusts and mirages. Arrive in Douz, "the gateway to the Sahara", on the edge of the great dunes. Continue to Matmata, famous for its troglodyte homes dug into the earth by the Berber people, where you enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, drive on to Sfax on the east coast.

Overnight: Sfax

Drive to El Jem to visit its colossal Roman amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved in the world, which once held 35,000 spectators. Lunch nearby. Continue to Sousse and explore its UNESCO-listed Medina, with the ribat fortress, the Great Mosque and lively souks. Then carry on along the coast to Hammamet.

In the morning, discover Hammamet, with its walled medina and kasbah overlooking a long sandy beach. Continue to Tunis to visit the Bardo National Museum, home to one of the world's finest collections of Roman mosaics. After lunch, explore the Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its covered souks, Zitouna Mosque and carved doorways.
